Calhoun-Isles

Once home to Native American's that camped on the shores of Lake Calhoun, this neighborhood is now where some of the most affluent houses in Minneapolis are. The grand houses from the 1920's and 30's posses impressive styling. Lake Calhoun flows into the Lake of the Isles that can be reached by canoe. Lake of the Isles is a man made channel that many luxury homes were built on. The trendy shopping and eating area is known as the Uptown Neighborhood. Old Brownstones are being converted to condos. Sail, wind surf or just watch the waves of Lake Calhoun.

Camden

It is the Camen neighborhood in Minneapolis, but it is named after Camden, New Jersey. Camden in 1995 was annexed with Webber and today is know as Camden. The parkway was donated to the city by Charles C. Webber and therefore bears his name. Draw the neighborhood lines from Interstate 94 on the east and Penn and Newton Avenues to the west to Dowling on the South and Webber parkway on the north. The neighborhood has industrial zones and a mix of middle-class and working-class homes. The Mississippi River is to the east and is one of the best features of this neighborhood.

Central

Here is where it is happening. The smaller neighborhoods that make up Downtown Minneapolis are Downtown East, Downtown West, Elliot Park, Loring Park, North Loop and Stevens Square. These neighborhoods blend in with office buildings, shipping, restaurants and theater and entertainment. Skyways connect many of the buildings keeping residents out of the elements. The Mississippi River makes a beautiful backdrop to these condos and lofts. Lunds Grocery store is a top-of-the-line full market servicing these residents. The North Loop is made up of old warehouses that now house lofts and resturants. Many marketing and advertising firms are housed in these warehouses. Live, work and play in your own backyard.

Longfellow

"By the Shores of the Gigacomic", the first line of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem about the Minnehaha Falls give this neighborhood it's name. The creek and dramatic falls and large recreational park are the center to this neighborhood. Traditional houses from the early 1900's - 1930's comprise this area. Smaller neighborhoods, Cooper, Hiawatha, Howe, and Seward all make-up Longfellow.

Near North

Near North is a community on the north side of Minneapolis. Contained within it are six smaller neighborhoods: Harrison, Hawthorne, Jordan, Near North, Sumner-Glenwood, Willard-Hay. The police, religious, and social grops work with the resident's of these communities to provide new opportunities to the families residing here.

Nokomis

Cross over 35W following the Parkway and you are in Nokomis made up of Diamond Lake, Ericsson, Field, Hale, Keewaydin, Minnehaha, Morris Park, Northrop, Page, Regina, and Wenonah. The creek, Parkway, Lake Nokomis, and Hiawatha Golf Course make this a fun neighborhood to recreate in. The light rail has a stop in this neighborhood making commutes easier. Stucco home from the 30's and 40's dot these streets. Many home improvements enhance these properties.

Northeast

Welcome to the neighborhood of Northeast Minneapolis where the strongest evidence of ethnic communities still exist. This community started as the working class area populated by Polish, Italian, Finnish, German, and Russian immigrants who came to work in the grain mills and sawmills along the river. Rail and factory jobs followed. By 1930 60% of this neighborhood was immigrants and their positive effect continues to be felt here.

Today the nearby University of Minnesota influences the area with housing for those attending or working at the U. Old "Nordeast: families continue to live here making third and fourth generations calling these streets home. Seventy-nine percent of the housing in this area is owner occupied contributing to the stability of the neighborhood.

Phillips

Go south from downtown Minneapolis and you are in the Phillips community. This neighborhood is moving from being a crime-ridden area to one where recent immigrants are establishing their homes and businesses.

Powderhorn

Come for the 4th of July fireworks and stay for a life time. Powderhorn is made up of Bancroft, Bryant, Corcoran, Lyndale, Powderhorn Park, Standish and Whittier. It is know for its community events and attempts to have families know other families. New businesses are bringing new life to the community

Southwest

This area of Minneapolis is bordered on one side by Edina, one side has the fun 50th and France shopping and restaurants area, Lake Harriet and Minnehaha Creek are natural boundaries, and lastly Highway 35W. Neighborhoods within Southwest are Linden Hills, East Harriet, King Field, Fulton, Lynnhurst, Tangletown, Armatage, Kenny, and Windom.The grid layout these streets defines parks, shopping, restaurants, and schools. You do not need to go too many blocks in any direction to find something fun and interesting. The King Field neighborhood has a selection of wood framed houses from the turn-of-the-century. East Harriet has come luxury houses right on the lake. Linden Hills is desired for its location near Lake Harriet and strong community feel. Tangle town has the twisting streets that gives it its name. It is an easy commute from downtown from Tangletown. The Lynnhurst neighborhood has grand houses that enjoy the Minnehaha Creek and the edge of Lake Harriet. The Fulton area enjoys the shopping of 50th and France. Both Armatage and Kenny enjoy 1940-1950 housing. Windom is a cheerful collection of houses with its own shopping area.

University

The name says University but it is home to many of the small, liberal arts colleges of Minneapolis. The neighborhoods are known as Cedar-Riverside, Como, Mercy-Holmes, Nicollet Island, Prospect Park and University. The large University of Minnesota runs through Cedar-Riverside known as the West Bank and Nicollet Island known as the East Bank. The river seperates the two banks. Enjoy Mercy-Holmes called Dinkytown where the entertainment for the U takes place. Many University athletics are in this area. There is always some event to go to in this neighborhood.
